Champagne Socialist, Sardine Conservative

In France, the expression *gauche caviar*—literally "caviar left"—is the equivalent of the English expression *champagne socialist*. It refers, often with irony, to affluent or privileged individuals who advocate left-wing political ideals while enjoying an affluent lifestyle.

French journalist, historian, and founder of *L'Événement du Jeudi* and *Marianne*, Jean-François Kahn famously remarked:

"The opposite of the caviar left—the sardine-in-oil right—does not exist."

With this witty observation, Kahn highlighted the asymmetry of the expression: while *gauche caviar* has become part of everyday political vocabulary in France, there is no equally established counterpart to describe the political right. His tongue-in-cheek invention, *droite sardine à l'huile* ("the sardine-in-oil right"), playfully suggests such an equivalent, but it never entered common usage.
