The French verb caviarder means to censor a text by blacking out certain passages, rendering them unreadable.
This expression, which dates back to the 20th century, refers to Russian censorship practices during the reign of Nicholas I of Russia.
At the time, censorship was carried out using black ink to conceal portions of text. The ink was quickly associated with caviar because of its dark colour and its Russian origins.
